NARRABUNDAH HOUSE

This beautiful mid century modern home in one of Canberra’s leafy inner suburbs was in need of some love. While architectural details and character were retained, both the exterior and interior underwent a refresh.

The front facade received an update with local stone and classic breezeblocks, fresh paint, a new driveway and extensive landscaping changes. Inside, the old shagpile carpets were replaced and a wood floor in keeping with the home’s era was laid. Classic slate tiles were added to the walls, along with wall and ceiling cladding in complementary hardwood. The kitchen was replaced with bespoke joinery that was meticulously installed and new details carefully honoured the mid century heritage of the home. Furniture was selected from the era, and combined with modern pieces to complement and enhance the feeling of space and warmth.

At the back, a new deck was built to make an outdoor entertaining space, and landscapers were brought in to turn an overgrown meadow into a terraced garden with concrete water feature that reflects the heritage of the building, sitting under the conserved gum tree and surrounded by careful planting. The original Hills Hoist washing line was even retained.

We were delighted to be able to reuse materials from the build to create new pieces. An offcut from the bespoke profile of the railing outside was made into a light fitting over the concrete kitchen benchtop and the leftover period breezeblocks were used for an extra wall.
